How wonderful that "Riding the Bus" is now available to listen to. Not just for those driving or cooking -- like Sue -- but especially for blind people like my daughter Kyle who would have loved it! Sounds like you did your usual perfect job, Rachel, and I am glad so many more people will love your book.

Rachel, I LOVED this post... the last paragraph was SO moving, but I also had a clenched stomach the whole time, feeling your initial anxiety of reading -- and comparing yourself against 'professionals' who know those intonations, inflections, pauses...It reminded me of the voice class I took in college (which, incidentally, was great fun)! I have to say, one of the things that actually surprised me the most about meeting you in person was the LACK of 'Joisy accent I noticed (remember, I'm married to a Jersey boy, who, under the influence of alcohol, reverts back to Jersey speak, accents and all). I'm not sure I noticed many Jersey-isms when we met.

I'm so glad you did this! What a wonderful experience professionally, and emotionally, to revisit that time. Thanks for sharing this private, intimate journey with us. And YAY for your new publisher reviving RIDING THE BUS into audio format.

Thank you for this level of detail. I consume audiobooks at a frightening pace, and I always wondered how they came about. I was listening to one tonight, a very high-profile author and title read by a very experienced narrator, and I caught two divergences from the text in one chapter!

You can be sure I'll listen to you, Rachel. Can't wait.

What an interesting and beautifully written blog post, Rachel! (not that I expect anything less from you). I was fascinated by your account of the recording process because I am a big fan of audio books. I usually have one audio going at all times, so I can listen to a book while I drive or cook.

As an avid audio book fan, I can say that I love to listen to memoirs read by the author. And I'm glad to hear that you decided not to worry too much about separate voices, other than those of people close to you. I think trying to come up with distinct voices can really backfire. I've listened to several fiction audios where the voices were so fake-sounding and awful that it actually ruined the listening experience for me (I'm listening to one like that now, a teen novel with an interesting plot but cringe-worthy character voices). Glad also to hear that The Story of Beautiful Girl was so wonderfully read - it deserves such a polished and accomplished reader!

Thanks for sharing your experiences - it was really fascinating to get a look behind the scenes.

Rachel, this is one of the most interesting blog posts I've ever read. The creation of an audiobook is such a mystery to those of us who just dream of it one day happening to our work. We do not realize all the many efforts by many professionals that go into the process of something that seems so simple, "just reading a book." But like so many things, the beauty is in the details and you've also described (with photos!) this process so well that I had tears in my eyes and felt like I was right there with you.

I know that magical feeling of being transported back in time to something written years earlier. How sentences can conjure up the past…I bet in a quiet recording studio there is almost a reverential feeling about the process…your very words, in sound, being saved and forever being there for readers now and in the future. Your you now and your you then, and Beth's, being forever spoken through a voice that carries with it all the experiences and family history two sisters share.

I can't tell you what it means to me, and I'll bet to others, to have a glimpse into the ins and outs of this process. And you were in my favorite city!

Merry Christmas, Happy day 6 of Hannukah & the very best of New Year's to you & yours. Love the blog & thanks for sharing. It makes me feel that I know you a little more than just as my new favorite author. In fact, earlier today I told my brother about your House on Teacher's Lane. I know he'll like it, as did I. Just finished The Magic Touch. Too bad you have such a stifled imagination!! :):):) What's next? I can't wait!
